This was the forerunner of the M1 Garand. It is known as the Springfield T3E2. Tested in the caliber of .276, the military wanted a higher caliber and went with the 30-06. Better try to google Pedersen caliber as well as it's also called. It was tested with other competitors like the Thompson auto rifle and ZH29 in 1929. Garand's design ultimately won that battle and became the WWI and WWII choice of Standard Issue Rifle.
As far as collecting goes...yeah, you would want to have this in your gallery. As a collector, any firearm that has been included in a military trials it's value worthy. You'd better have some paper, because these are auctioning for around $45,000 it seems. Here's a link to an auction back in 2016.
The history of this story is so vast, as the military goes to long lengths to test guns for general usage. It's ordinance department was lead by Springfield Armory. At the time of this rifles testing, they were coming up with a 30 caliber rifle as well. The beginning of the Springfield M1 Garand began after that.
