Colt M1911 patent used by other manufacturers

For well over 100 years there has been only one handgun in 45 acp and a 5-inch barrel. That firearm is the Colt 1911. Within the last decade many other manufacturers have entered the market with their own branded 1911 handguns. It really helps the 1911 if you ask me. The basic Colt 1911 is over $700 while the Ruger SR1911 is around $650. Ruger gives you the extended beavertail, better sights and a pretty nice trigger. While that basic Colt won't even have the beavertail extension. To say the Colt 1911 is King of its class is an understatement.

The key is that longer barrels provide handguns with better accuracy and minimized recoil. Those two features have opened up doors to a new genre of handguns. I just call them the 5-inch semigroup. Before I knew about the Glock 41, I had my eyes on a Springfield XDM Competition in 9mm. The barrel length on that one is 5.3 inches. It was created to be used for competition right out of the box. Between us I still have my sights on that Springfield.

So now we have this still fairly new addition to the 5-inch semigroup. Glocks are just in a class of their own. It's taken most gun companies a century to make establish a solid brand. Glocks entered into the states within the late 1980s. Right after most laughed at them, everyone relied on them. The gun will shoot every time. Glock already has a couple of 5-inch handguns. They include the G34 in 9 mill, G35 in 40 Cal., G40 10 mill, and now the G41 in 45 acp. The barrel length is 5.31 inches for all of them except the G40 Gen4 MOS. It has a 6.02-inch barrel.

My job at Gunversation is to bring you options. There are so many firearms that it's truly hard to keep up with them all. Luckily I sit at my bedroom desk surfing the internet for gun information most of my nights. Check out the two videos by Hickok45. He's the best when it comes to video reviews.
