Growing up in the modern time of firearms means I don't really care for revolvers. By modern times I mean the era of magazines. Who needs six shots when you can have fifteen right? When I really started getting into guns is when I learned to respect the revolver. One of the biggest differences between a revolver and a semi-auto are the rounds they fire. Revolvers began their lives chambered for large round handgun ammunition. Colt's 1851 Navy was a .36 caliber firearm. Dirty Harry carried a Smith & Wesson model 29 chambered in .44 magnum. Revolvers seem to be just hunks large hunks of metal with beauty and a refined look put on the back burner.
It's been embedded in most of our minds to get out the way of a large rising revolver. They're synonymous with large ammunition, even though today they come chambered in small calibers like .22 long rifle. I should take what I said back about them being unattractive. For me to like a revolver's look the ejector rod must extend the length of the barrel. In my opinion most of the sexist six shooters have full length ejector rods. Big guns scare people. What's more impressive is that people know revolvers shoot big rounds, and that's the scary thing about them. Just make sure the barrel is over 3" inches long. A short-barrel revolver is scary, but not as much as the one Dirty Harry carried. Here's a couple of my picks for .357 magnums that would scare any intruder.
My top pick is the Ruger GP 100. I'm partial to the brand because of my love for the 1990's P89. They've produced this gun for over 50 years now. One statement you'll normally hear about this gun is that it's a solid revolver.
The Smith & Wesson 686 is truly the definition of a proper revolver. The history behind the name is of firearm legend. They might have had a thing or two to do with the development of the revolver. I'm playing....they had much to do with the development of the revolver and their ammunition. Guess who manufactured Dirty Harry's .357?...
These guns may remind you of a time men wore gun belts in the west. Americans have an idea of the "Wild West" and what may have went down. Ruger makes the Blackhawk .357 magnum. There are many others that came before it from names like Colt, S&W and Remington. I put this one down in my all time scariest revolver list any day.
